While King Henry VIII was invading France, King James IV of Scotland crossed the Tweed into Northern England with a Scots Army of 50,000. With the majority of the English army away in France, the defense of England was left to Thomas Howard Earl of Surrey with an army of 25,000 men. The murderous storm of arrows from the English longbow men cut though he Scottish Schiltrons (dense circles of Spearman). The English cavalry exploited this, cutting through the Scots infantry. this was followed by hand to hand fighting, with the English infantry slaughtering the surviving Scots. At the end of the battle King James IV was dead, along with most of the Scottish nobles. The battle was the last battle to be won by the longbow.

Following an astonishing night march, the tanks of 1st Northamptonshire Yeomanry and men of 1st Battalion Black Watch found themselves ensconced in the village of St. Aignan de Cramesnil some 4 miles behind German lines. Shortly after noon a small group of Tiger I tanks were spotted advancing north by 3 Troop, A Squadron. Some minutes later Captain Boardman arrived in his Sherman I and when the enemy were within 800 yards he gave the order to open fire. The first two shots by the troops Firefly brewed up the rearmost target. After moving to a new position Trooper Joe Ekins fired again, knocking out a second Tiger. Finally he turned his attention to the remaining tank, destroying it with two more rounds. Unknown to the British tankmen at the time it is now believed that the last Tiger was that of the top German tank ace Hauptsturmfurher Michael Wittmann.

On the afternoon of 5th September 1940, Spitfires of 41 Sqn intercepted a large formation of Heinkel 111 bombers and their escorts over the Thames estuary, en route for London. Flying N3162 as Red 2, Flight Lieutenant Eric Lock attacked the bombers head on as they began to turn north. In a fraught combat, Lock was to destroy two He.111s and a Bf.109 on that single mission, setting him on course to become the highest scoring ace in the RAF during the Battle of Britain with sixteen confirmed victories and one shared. His final total at the end of the war was twenty six kills confirmed and eight probables.
