This Week's Half Price Art

One of the most iconic ships ever to serve in the Royal Navy, The three-decked second rate HMS Temeraire was built at Chatham in 1798 and spent many years blockading the French port of Brest before her finest hour at Trafalgar on 21st October 1805 when she came to the rescue of HMS Victory before capturing two prizes, the Redoutable and Fougueux, spending much of the battle with her captives lashed to her sides. After spending her final years first as a prison hulk, then as a guard ship in the Medway, she was finally sold for scrap in 1838, her last journey being the subject of JMW Turner's most famous painting. In this view, Temeraire is shown leaving Plymouth in her pre-Trafalgar state before receiving her 'crowned head' figurehead.

Having taken terrible punishment from the guns of the allied French and Spanish fleet as she broke through the line, HMS Victory found herself engaged by the French Redoutable, a bitter battle that saw the two ships locked together, pouring shot into one another with terrifying ferocity and which left the British Admiral, Lord Horatio Nelson fatally wounded. In the background, HMS Neptune is emerging through the gunsmoke and is about to pass the wreck of the French flagship Bucentaure which Victory so spectacularly routed as she passed through the allied line. HMS Temeraire, which followed Victory through, and which was also to become embroiled on the Redoutables fight, is obscured by the smoke beyond the British flagship.

Queen Beach, one of the 4 sectors of Sword Beach, where most of the landings of D-Day were carried out. Two Fairey Firefly F Mk1s of 1770 NAS embarked on HMS Indefatigable are shown outbound on Operation Meridian I on 24th January 1945. The nearest aircraft is DT947, flown by Vin Redding. Operation Meridian was a series of two air attacks on Japanese-held oil refineries at Palembang on Sumatra. The huge aviation fuel output of these refineries was reduced to only a quarter of their output after the two raids on the 24th and 29th January 1945.

The Italian Air Force's involvement in the Battle of Britain is one of the less documented facets of the conflict of 1940, but raids by aircraft of the Corpo Aereo Italiano (CAI) on mainland Britain were a reality in the closing stages, usually with little effect and almost always with high losses on the Italian side, due largely to obsolete aircraft and lack of pilot training. Based at Ursel in Belgium, Fiat BR.20 bombers flew over 100 sorties, usually escorted by Fiat CR.42s, as illustrated here, the nearest aircraft being that of 18° Gruppo's Commanding Officer Maggiore Ferruccio Vosilla, wearing the white fuselage band and command pennant on the fuselage side.
