 Ayrton Senna in his #27 car on his way to winning the 1990 Monaco Grand Prix, leading the Tyrell of Jean Alesi and the McLaren of Gerhard Berger out of Mirabeau and into the Station Hairpin.  The historic number 27, made famous by Gilles Villeneuve at Ferrari, had been adopted by McLaren for the start of the 1990 season after Ferrari took the numbers 1 and 2 for their cars.  Senna won the 1990 word championship in this car, but never drove the 27 car again after switching to number 1 for the next season.

 The 2002 Grand Prix season started with much excitement as for the first few races the major teams sparred for supremacy. Just when it looked as if there would be a three-way fight between Ferrari, Williams and McLaren, along came Michael Schumacher in the 2002 Ferrari and showed the supremacy of the driver and machine package. However, against all odds and demonstrating supreme confidence and skill on a track where top speed was not all important, David Coulthard made one of the best drives of his career. Pulling out all the stops lie grabbed second spot on the grid. For once on race day he was not to be easily pushed aside and from the sprint to the first corner, he managed to grab first place and though pressed throughout the race, gave no quarter. In a supreme demonstration reminiscent of Senna and Mansell years ago, he made his car so wide that no-one could pass, and went on to take a memorable and well-deserved victory. Our picture shows him at Lowes Hairpin with the Williarris and Ferraris waiting to pounce at the slightest mistake - which did not happen.

20 September 1854: The first battle of the Crimean War took place when the British and French attacked the Russians who held a formidable position on the steep slope above the River Alma. The 33rd was the centre regiment of the 1st Brigade, which was ordered to advance across the river and into the direction of the 'Great Redoubt', an entrenched position which the Russians had dug to form a protective earth bank. This position held as many as 16 battalions and 14 heavy guns. Marching steadily uphill, under artillery and musket fire, the 7th, 23rd and 33rd Regiments, despite losing their line formation, reached their objective and leapt into the Great Redoubt cheering as they did so. The Russian infantry were formed in a deep mass, and the two sides blazed away at each other at short range. The British carried the position most gallantly, and after a fierce struggle drove the Russians out. Three officers in succession had been shot while carrying the Colours of the 33rd.  Captain Wallis described how, as the Russian gunners furiously struggled to withdraw their guns, a private of the 33rd spotted one being limbered up. Two horses were already attached, but he managed to seize the gun and bring it away. Sir George Brown, commanding the Light Division , had seen his action and ordered Colonel Blake to promote him to sergeant for his gallant conduct.  The Light Division had been so mauled and disordered that a Russian counter-attack drove it back from the Great Redoubt, but the Guards and the Highland Brigade coming up at last drove the enemy from the battlefield.  The 33rd suffered more casualties than any other British regiment engaged. Colonel Blake's horse was wounded in three places.

Despite the attack being conducted at night, with frequent snow flurries, and minefields, all the objectives were taken, and at first light the road to Port Stanley lay open and unopposed.

This Week's Half Price Aviation Art

 Viciously maligned for failing to prevent the sinking of the German battleship Tirpitz at Kaafjord on 12th November 1944, Heinrich Ehrler was one of the Luftwaffe's greatest leaders, highly decorated and respected by all who flew with him.  The Bf.109s of 6./JG5, based at Petsamo in Finland, took on a variety of difficult roles in the Scandinavian theatre, operating in the most testing of conditions, often round the clock in the summer months.  Here, Ehrler's own machine, <i>Yellow 12</i> leads other aircraft of 6./JG5 on a patrol above the mighty Norwegian fjords.

Hawker Hurricanes of 249 squadron (RAF) departing off HMS Ark Royal in June 1941 as par tof Force H. The Hurricanes were to become part of the Defence of Malta against the onslought and non stop bombing by the Axis Bombers and HMS Ark Royal would be sunk only a few months later when on the 13th November 1941 HMS Ark Royal was hit by a single torpedo from the German U-boat U81. The torpedo hit  on the starboard side near the starboard boiler room causing a 130ft by 30ft hole. Water poured in causing a 10% list immediately. The flooding spread quickly to the middle of the ship and then to the port boiler room, eectric power failed,  and after 14 hours while in tow to Gibraltar she capsized and sunk the following day.
