While dominating the race, a loose wheel nut forced Nigel Mansell into the pits with only 7 laps remaining. He emerged about 5 seconds behind Senna, and one of the best duels in F1 history ensued, as Mansell quickly closed the gap.. With four laps to go of the tight street circuit at Monaco, Mansell could not get around the McLaren of Senna, and finished just two tenths of a second behind him at the end of the race.

During the 2nd Mahratta War, Major General Sir Arthur Wellesley (later, the Duke of Wellington) commanding a small British force was greatly outnumbered by the Mahratta army which faced him in Berar. Seeing two villages on opposite banks of the Kaitna river, he correctly deduced that a ford lay between them. Crossing the ford with his troops, he deployed to face the enemy with his right and left flanks protected by the Juah and Kaitna rivers. The enemy were only able to deploy a small part of their force in the intervening space. A formation of Mahratta cavalry charged the 74th Highlanders in flank and began capturing some of the British guns. In response, Lt Colonel Maxwell advanced with his cavalry brigade, which consisted of three regiments of Native Cavalry and the 19th Light Dragoons and charged the enemy's left, driving the Mahrattas into the river Juah. This river had less water in it than the Kaitna, and had very steep banks. The dragoons crossed the river and charged, driving the enemy off the field. However, so large was the enemy's force that the rear of the British position was still threatened. Maxwell's cavalry returned to the scene, and ended the day with another charge against the Mahratta infantry, though men and horses were exhausted. Maxwell was killed in the fighting. Light dragoons in India wore a helmet, typically black, enamelled with a brass comb, a red mane and a black turban. They were armed with the 1796 pattern light cavalry sabre. A carbine hung by a swivel from the shoulder belt. Jackets were 'French grey'. In marching order the rolled cloak was carried in front of the saddle, with a leather valise behind. Saddle cloths were little worn. Harness was usually black. Light cavalry horses differed only very slightly from those of the 'heavies'.

This Week's Half Price Aviation Art

It was during the inter-war period that a reawakening interest in twin engined fighter design prompted several countries to investigate a number of revolutionary concepts, of these only the Lockheeds sleek and unconventional P.38 was to be put into large scale production, proving to be a versatile and dominant fighter possessed of extremely long range, good speed and manoeuverability and a formidable armament. When production ceased in 1945, 9,923 examples of the P38 Lightning had been delivered.

To the left can be seen the famous A Bit O Lace. All these aircraft were based at Rattlesden. The scene is early 1945, the aircraft flying out to bomb rail marshalling yards.

In 1944 Berlin was probably the most defended city in the world. The Luftwaffe had kept what reserves it had for planes to defend Berlin. On March 6th, 1944, The USAAF were involved in the massive air raid on Berlin, 69 B17s were lost - but the Luftwaffe lost 160 planes. Whereas the US 8th Air Force could recover from these aircraft losses, the German Luftwaffe could not. By the end of the war, the 8th Air Force and the Royal Air Force had destroyed 70% of Berlin.

Planned as a successor to the Barracuda, the Fairey Spearfish was one of the largest and heaviest single-engined aircraft ever flown. This example, RA363, first took to the air on 23rd September 1947 but a change in naval requirements brought the project to a premature halt before being superceded by the highly successful Gannet.
